Poppies & PortraitsAs chair/member of a local camera club I try to keep the diary as interesting as possible and whilst our recent outdoor evening was scheduled to be shot in a local poppy field, this had suffered with the heat and so an alternative location had to be found. Thanks to the generosity of a local farmer who allowed us to use his field at the last minute, not only did we have use of a scattering of poppies but the golden backdrop of his fabulous crop and were blessed stunning lighting. To top it all, we then had the pleasure of the stunning Cat Owen (a local performer/singer) and her equally lovely friend Tammy providing the focal point for teaching people how to bend the rules of composition/exposure and create beautiful, naturally-lit images in camera. We showed members how to create the soft vintage feel images with lens flare by shooting into the sun, how to shoot with the sun and avoid ugly shadows and also how to shoot other high key images which only require 'tweaking' of the colour balance to produce a harder, more stylized look. The second part of the session was in a much darker location by the canal which offered a bit more of a challenge due to low light conditions but again yielded some great shots.
