Sooooo, this happened - an MPA West Midlands Region winnerSo here goes another non-wedding post! Despite being a member of a couple, I have never tried for a qualification with any of the photography associations around; purely because the photography has always interested me more than a piece of paper. However, with recent camera club discussions regarding the judging of images, I have recently entered a few. The Master Photographers Association recently held their annual competition. Not being 'qualified' with them, I was placed into their 'up and coming' category (although any awards given are at the same level as achieved by their 'qualified' members and these are either marked as merit or winner). I am rather pleased to say that out of 3 portrait images entered, all 3 received a merit. Also, of 5 images entered into the 'open' category, 3 received a merit and one was the winner of the category for the West Midlands Region. Not bad for my first entry. The winning image 'Are you coming to join us?' was taken in Derbyshire. I had been wanting to take a picture with sheep on a feeder for a while and never really found the right setting. We were travelling back from a commercial shoot when Phil spotted the ideal location - so it was a case of abandoning the car, camping out next to a dry stone wall, ignoring quizzical looks from passing motorists and waiting until the sheep arranged themselves correctly for me (or rather taking several pictures until I had one that I thought would 'work'. To be fair this was only the start of the picture's journey, because I knew the 'look' I wanted could not be achieved in camera. Post processing work in photoshop allowed me to darken down the background to bring out the sheep, tone the image and allow me to add a texture gave it a more painterly feel. What a great way to celebrate it's first public outing! west midlands winner.pdf
